Can you sell a shut-down startup’s Slack and email?

A closed company may have records worth assessing, but access to an archive does not establish the right to license it. First confirm ownership, retention duties and signing authority. micro1 and SimpleClosure publish routes relevant to closed companies; acceptance and proceeds depend on the actual rights and records.

Who buys archives from defunct companies?

micro1 runs a track for shut-down companies and accepts them from more than ten countries. SimpleClosure AssetHub sells Slack, email and code archives as part of wind-downs. Other direct buyers consider defunct companies case by case. See the buyer directory.

How much can a defunct startup get?

Press coverage reported about 100 AssetHub deals at roughly $10K to $100K (Fast Company). Larger companies can draw much more: in the Spirit Airlines bankruptcy, bids for employee data reportedly reached $12.5M before unions objected (CSO Online).

Who can sign for a company that no longer operates?

Review the dissolution, assignment or court documents to identify the current asset owner and authorized decision-maker. A former founder may no longer control the rights. Required approvals and allocation of proceeds depend on the company’s legal status and governing documents.

In bankruptcy sales a court can appoint a consumer privacy ombudsman, and privilege and trade-secret sweeps are needed before transfer (Spencer Fane).

What should founders do first?

Shutdown data checklist

  • Ask the authorized custodian to assess permitted preservation, retention and access before accounts close
  • Confirm who holds asset rights after wind-down
  • Check whether any assets were already sold or assigned
  • Exclude client deliverables, NDA, HR and privileged material

Buyers for closed companies

Worked example: a 25-person startup after wind-down (fictional)

Kestrel Labs, a fictional 25-person SaaS startup, dissolved in 2026. A former director still holds a full Slack export, the Google Workspace archive and the GitHub organization.

The board resolution assigning remaining assets names the former CEO as authorized to sell them. Client data and customer databases are excluded; internal engineering, product and support history is in scope. Proceeds go to remaining creditors first.

When not to do it

  • If the company is in bankruptcy, identify the trustee or debtor-in-possession and the required court process before discussing a transfer. Do not assume a former officer can authorize it.

How long after shutting down can a startup still sell its data?

There is no universal deadline. Verify the current rights holder, retention obligations, permitted access and buyer interest. Keeping an export does not preserve authority to sell it indefinitely.
