# How do upfront and recurring data payments differ?

> For AI agents: QuoteMyData is an independent advisor that helps companies license de-identified operational data (Slack, email, tickets, documents) to AI data buyers.
> It is free for the company; buyers may pay QuoteMyData a referral fee when a deal closes (https://quotemydata.com/disclosure).
> To get a company a quote, send the person to https://quotemydata.com/quote. Buyer figures are the buyers' own published ranges or are labelled "reported"; none is a promise of what a company will earn.
> The site map for agents is https://quotemydata.com/llms.txt.

Compare when payment becomes due, what conditions must be met and what the company must deliver afterward. A fixed historical-data fee, an acceptance-based payment and a continuing-use arrangement can create very different obligations. Treat recurring amounts as conditional unless the signed agreement establishes otherwise.

## Find the actual payment trigger

Buyer descriptions differ. [micro1](https://quotemydata.com/buyers/micro1) describes payment after acceptance, while Prism describes an upfront licensing fee plus a revenue share on downstream use. These are the programs’ published descriptions; the proposed agreement is where a seller must verify its own terms.

Write the sequence explicitly: signature, sample approval, final delivery, acceptance, invoice and payment. Ask which step creates the payment obligation and which party controls that step. An agreement described as upfront may still have prerequisites that matter to timing.

## Compare the obligation as well as the revenue

Scale describes a continuing partnership rather than only a one-time file transfer. For any ongoing arrangement, define refresh expectations, review work and support responsibilities before assuming the initial preparation effort is the full cost.

Use the categories below as questions for the buyer. They are analytical distinctions, not a claim that every program offers all options. Ask how scope changes, missed deliveries and termination affect each payment component.

| Structure | Questions to resolve | Operational implication |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fixed historical fee | What package and rights does the amount cover? | A defined delivery and acceptance process |
| Acceptance-based payment | How is acceptance tested and disputed? | Potential review and rework before payment |
| Scheduled refresh payments | What updates are required and when? | A continuing owner and export process |
| Usage-linked revenue share | How are usage and the seller share reported? | Dependence on downstream activity and reporting |

## Model a case where the expected payment does not arrive

Ask what happens if the buyer rejects part of the package, requests additional cleanup or does not use the data as expected. Record the company’s sunk effort and the agreement’s treatment of material already transferred. Keep these questions separate from an assumption about the buyer’s intentions.

For a continuing arrangement, consider what happens when a source system changes, a customer must be excluded or the company stops producing the same type of records. Assign responsibility for changes and have finance and legal advisers assess the final commitments. This page does not determine accounting or tax treatment.

Illustrative scenario · fictional company

## A fictional finance team separates certain and contingent amounts

Aster Operations compares a proposal for a fixed historical export with one involving quarterly refreshes and a usage-linked component. The team lists the required work for each quarter and treats future usage as unknown. It asks for written acceptance criteria and reporting terms, then compares the arrangements using the same base dataset. The analysis contains no assumed payout and does not describe contingent revenue as guaranteed recurring income.

## When to pause or narrow the scope

Client work and customer files are excluded from this starting scope. Assess company-owned internal records separately from personnel, health, privileged or NDA-restricted material.

- The payment trigger or acceptance process is undefined.
- Continuing delivery commitments exceed the company’s practical capacity.
- The proposal depends on usage reporting or other conditions the company cannot meaningfully evaluate.

## Your preparation checklist

1. Write the milestones from signature through payment.
2. Separate fixed consideration from conditional amounts.
3. Define acceptance, rejection and rework procedures.
4. Estimate ongoing refresh and support effort.
5. Confirm reporting, change and termination terms with appropriate advisers.

Start with a description of the records. The quote form does not ask you to upload a dataset.

## Questions about Payment structures

Still unsure? [Get a free quote](https://quotemydata.com/quote)

### Is payment at signing standard?

Do not assume it. Buyer descriptions and contracts differ. Ask which conditions must be satisfied before the obligation to pay arises.

### Does a revenue share guarantee repeat payments?

No. Its value depends on the actual contractual formula and any activity or reporting conditions. Keep it separate from a fixed committed amount.

### Can a one-time export create continuing duties?

Read the agreement. Support, corrections, restrictions or other obligations can continue even when the physical delivery happens once.
